AN EXCEPTION

Such a house on the cliff is a relatively uncommon example of an isolated house since, as Frank Heath wrote: "Scattered over the island are various hamlets mostly of ancient origin, which all more or less exhibit traces of their former character. The local type of dwelling-house, where it has been permitted to remain, is of simple but pleasing style. These houses are stone built... sometimes thatched, and often have a porch, the entrance to which is set at right angles to the inner door so as to afford protection from the wind. Cottage.jpg
The majority of these simple homesteads are not earlier than the 18th cent., but a few are of Tudor date, including a charming example known as Avice Cottage, now a museum." (Dorset by Frank R. Heath, Methuen & Co, 1949)
Avice Cottage shown here was built in 1640, and later named thus after the three Avices in Thomas Hardy's The Well-Beloved. It was given to be a museum in 1929 by Dr. Marie Stopes.
