PUNCH AND JUDY

A map of Weymouth seafront showing the area around the Jubilee clock and the point from which this view was taken.

The very first Punch and Judy show in England, if we are to believe Samuel Pepys, took place on May 26, 1662. "Punch" is the English manifestation of the Italian Pulcinella from Commedia dell'arte. The Weymouth Punch and Judy performer from 1926 to 1974 was Frank Edmonds of Chester, as his father had been before him. His nephew 'bottled' for him, i.e. collected the money.

Judith Stinton's interesting book Weymouth & Mr. Punch, Harlequin Press, 2008, provides further detailed information on the subject. See also 'Powys's Punch and Judy shows: Weymouth Sands and Misogyny', by Linda Pashka, la lettre powysienne 12, autumn 2006.
