GEORGE III
STATUE
A map of Weymouth seafront showing the area around the statue of George III and the point from which this view was taken.
The statue was erected in 1809, just after the King's last visit, in commemoration of George III's jubilee and "as a memorial to future ages of the virtues of the monarch". For Weymouth's prosperity had steadily declined until George III selected it as a marine residence and gave it a new life as a watering-place.
