BRUNSWICK TERRACE

A map of Weymouth seafront showing the position of Brunswick Terrace and the point on the beach, pebbles in this area, from which this view was taken.

Penn House, the relatively large red brick house, belonged to the grandparents of John Cowper Powys so that he was a frequent visitor there as a boy.

"For it must be understood (...) that the seashore opposite Brunswick Terrace was entirely composed of shelving banks of pebbles, and it was here, because the water grew so quickly deep, that the fishermen drew in their nets and it was here—beyond the 'red post' that later made such an impression on my brother Llewelyn's mind—that men were allowed to bathe without bathing-clothes." (J. C. Powys, Autobiography ).
