THE POWYS HERITAGE MONOGRAPHS

A.B. Gourlay
The Powys Brothers at Sherborne School

This is the first printing of a talk by Arthur Gourlay, a master and historian of Sherborne, originally delivered in 1974. Drawing mainly on published writings by three of the brothers — John Cowper, Littleton and Llewelyn — Gourlay presents a series of cameo portraits spanning three generations of Powys family members, enhanced by his own profound knowledge of and affection for the school and the region. John Cowper and Llewelyn inevitably take centre stage, with their different brands of eloquence and ambivalence, but all the protagonists, masters included, are brought to brief and vivid life, through anecdotes both humorous and poignant. This is the first time that such scattered recollections have been brought together between two covers to give a composite and nostalgic picture of the Powys Brothers' school days.
