THE POWYS HERITAGE MONOGRAPHS

Glen Cavaliero
The Powys Family: Some Records of a Friendship

The poet and critic Glen Cavaliero first met John Cowper Powys during a trip to North Wales in the summer of 1958, after sending him a fan letter the previous autumn. That visit led to other meetings not only with John Cowper and his companion Phyllis Playter, but with all the other Powys brothers and sisters still living — Marian, Philippa, William Ernest, and Lucy — as well as with Llewelyn Powys's widow, Alyse Gregory, and closest friend Louis Wilkinson. These engaging reminiscences, both amusing and poignant, are vividly evocative of time and place, yet of timelessness too in the 'largesse of spirit' that was common to these rare individuals. Dr Cavaliero, Fellow Commoner of St Catherine's College, Cambridge, and Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, has published studies of John Cowper Powys, E.M. Forster, Charles Williams, and the Supernatural in English Fiction, as well as several volumes of poetry. The clarity and eye for detail which characterize his writing are in ample evidence in this eloquent memoir.
