Universities

I have never been invited by the real authorities of any of the big American universities so to speak under their auspices, except the University of California; and even there the personage who introduced me was in such a sour temper that he apologized to my audience for not being able to say anything reliable about me because my name was not in the British Who's Who.
But the contempt with which I have been treated — I who have been such an unwearied peripatetic philosopher to the American people for so long — by the big fashionable universities has been more than made up for by the way I have been welcomed by the small colleges and the remoter state colleges. (John Cowper Powys, Autobiography)
