Apart from New York, especially Greenwich Village where he felt at home as we have already seen, in the East his favourite city was Philadelphia, and not only because there he had met Frances:
Philadelphia, always my favourite city in this whole continent, preserved an attitude to my cerebral antics that was at once superciliously aloof and affectionately amused.
