...I made friends with two charming American boys from the Argonne battle and was able to considerably change their point of view with regard to this crusade against "Reds and Radicals". They had been lied to incredibly; and the newspapers are conducting a feverish campaign to make use of the returned soldiers as Cossacks, to lynch, or at least harass and bully, all declared liberals ...this particular moment is not a pleasant one to be a public speaker in, unless you have a penchant for the Status Quo, which it is not possible for any self-respecting person to have in a country like this.
